Oronos is a team of multidisciplinary students with the objective of designing, building and operating high-power rockets. The club represents Polytechnique Montreal at the Spaceport America Cup (SA Cup), the most demanding international rocket competition. Apart from international visibility, Oronos tries, through its activities, to build a Canadian expertise in the space industry and to share the members' passion for sciences and space with the public. It is also an opportunity for future professionals to develop new skills and apply notions learnt in class to concrete and interesting projects.
The Spaceport America Cup takes place once a year, in June, in Las Cruces, New-Mexico. This competition, which attracts teams from many countries, is organized by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA). ESRA is a non-profit organization working to increase the public knowledge in the domain of rocketry, through engineering competitions and educational activities. The competition which was on its 13th edition in June 2018 offers two competitive categories : basic category and advanced category. The objective of each category is to launch a 10-pound scientific experiment with the CubeSat format to a specific altitude as precisely as possible. The altitude is fixed to 10 000 feet for the base category and 30 000 feet for the advanced category. Rules concerning the prototypes are somewhat different for each category, but they both favour creativity, innovation, and professionalism.
