The Competition
The Spaceport America Cup takes place once a year, in June, in Las Cruces, New-Mexico. This competition, which attracts teams from many countries, is organized by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA). ESRA is a non-profit organization working to increase the public knowledge in the domain of rocketry, through engineering competitions and educational activities. The competition which was on its 13th edition in June 2018 offers two competitive categories : basic category and advanced category. The objective of each category is to launch a 10-pound scientific experiment with the CubeSat format to a specific altitude as precisely as possible. The altitude is fixed to 10 000 feet for the base category and 30 000 feet for the advanced category. Rules concerning the prototypes are somewhat different for each category, but they both favour creativity, innovation, and professionalism.
